Biography
Night of the Sentinels
In 1991, Jubilee was taken in as a foster child by a couple in New York. In late 1992, she discovered that she was a mutant when she accidentally destroyed her family's VCR using her latent explosive powers. Her foster parents were distraught over what to do with her, but legitimately had her best interests at heart. Her father registered her with the Mutant Control Agency (MCA), mistakenly believing its propaganda promoting it as a safe outreach program for young mutants. In fact, the data he gave to the MCA was used to program the Sentinels, giant mutant-hunting robots developed by MCA head Henry Gyrich and lead scientist Bolivar Trask. Jubilee overheard her parents talking and was heartbroken that her parents were treating her differently because she was a mutant. She went to the arcade at the local mall to occupy herself, at which time a Sentinel attacked the Lee home, attempting to grab the absent Jubilee out of her bedroom. As Jubilee wrestled with her emotions, her powers took over, and she accidentally destroyed the arcade machine she was playing. The manager of the arcade identified her as a mutant and angrily told her to get out.
As Jubilee rushed out of the arcade, she briefly bumped into two other women—Storm and Rogue of the heroic mutant faction, the X-Men. As she tried to leave the mall, she was confronted by the Sentinel stomping through it, seeking her out. The Sentinel grabbed her with a long metal appendage, but Storm and Rogue interfered and began to attack it. Storm used her flight and mastery of weather forces (specifically lightning) to retrieve Jubilee, while Rogue simply used her agility and power to pummel the robot. It soon overpowered them however, until another X-Man, Gambit, interfered. Gambit possessed the ability to imbue inanimate objects (often playing cards) with energy, turning them into powerful projectiles. He too was knocked aside by the massive Sentinel, but Jubilee managed to harness her powers well enough to keep it from killing him. The robot pursued Jubilee out of the mall and fired a gas grenade that caused her to pass out. As she lost consciousness, she was caught by another X-Man, Cyclops, who wore a red visor over his eyes. Cyclops fired a powerful energy blast from his visor that decapitated the Sentinel, sending it crashing to the ground defeated.
Jubilee awoke in a bed attached to a medical monitoring system, which her powers again destroyed. She got out of bed and explored, and found that she was in the X-Men's secret headquarters. She saw the mutants Beast, a furry blue man experimenting in a chemical laboratory, and Morph, a remarkable shapeshifter watching reports of the Sentinel attack on television. In one room, she found the detached head of the Sentinel, and hid as two more mutants entered: Professor X, Charles Xavier, the physically handicapped leader of the organization; and Jean Grey, both powerful telepaths. Xavier detected Jubilee's presence and tried to get the other mutants to restrain her, but she ran into the Danger Room, a scientifically sophisticated area used for advanced X-Men training. The room was in use by Gambit and Wolverine, a gruff man with retractable metal claws. The two sparred, but Jubilee got the wrong impression, and used her powers to attack Wolverine and attempt to protect Gambit. Storm, Beast, and Morph ran into the room, and Beast explained the Danger Room to her.
Storm took Jubilee around the property and explained to her the nature of the X-Men and Professor Xavier's School for the Gifted, where they learn "how to control [their] mutant powers for the benefit of mankind." Later, Jubilee snuck out of the school and tried to return home to check on her parents, but she was confronted by a pair of Sentinels and again knocked out by noxious gas. She was kidnapped by Henry Gyrich, who took her to the Sentinel factory in Detroit. She was interrogated regarding the X-Men, but didn't give up any information. Meanwhile, the X-Men attacked the MCA headquarters in the forests of New York, successfully destroying their mutant registration files, though Morph was seemingly killed by Sentinels as he tried to escape. The team attacked the Sentinel factory, forcing Gyrich and Bolivar Trask to escape as they destroyed the remaining Sentinels and freed Jubilee. She returned home and thanked her foster parents for taking care of her before moving into the School and officially joining the X-Men.[1]
