Biography
Early life
As a young man, Dr. Charles Xavier worked in a psychiatric hospital in a small country that had recently been invaded as part of a war. There, he met a local man named Magnus working as a medical aide. Xavier used his powers to secretly calm the tormented minds of his patients. Small portions of the foreign invading force soon returned, and Charles and Magnus revealed their mutant powers to each other to better protect their patients. Charles acted purely in defense, but Magnus's rage manifested into retaliatory violence against his foes. Charles was disturbed at Magnus's demeanor, insisting that their powers must be used to further the cause of peace. But Magnus believed that humans couldn't even be peaceful among themselves, and that there was no hope for such an outcome. Magnus adopted the moniker Magneto and assembled a legion of followers who assaulted various governmental and industrial centers in order to disrupt human civilization. Xavier eventually managed to dispel Magneto with his mental powers, forcing him into hiding for a number of years.[1]
The X-Men
- For full details, see X-Men (Earth-92131).
Charles Xavier founded his School for the Gifted and the heroic X-Men as a means to combat prejudices against mutants while simultaneously bettering and defending humankind. The X-Men operated in the shadows for some time until late 1992, when they were thrust into the spotlight as a result of several altercations with the Sentinels, giant mutant-hunting robots developed by Henry Gyrich's Mutant Control Agency (MCA). The X-Men at this time consisted of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, Beast, Rogue, Gambit, and Morph. The X-Men encountered a young mutant named Jubilee and took her among their ranks, rescuing her from a Sentinel factory in Detroit and shutting down Gyrich's operations for the time being. The X-Men also destroyed the MCA's mutant registration records, though Beast was taken to a federal prison and Morph was apparently killed by a Sentinel in the process. His body was left behind as the team fled, but Xavier and Grey could no longer detect his presence, and were certain of his death.[2] Xavier and Beast agreed that he should peacefully stand trial in order to give him a chance to say his piece to the public. However, the night before his bail hearing, Magneto reemerged and attempted to free him, violently assaulting the federal facility. Beast refused, and Magneto left, but not before learning that he and Xavier were aligned. Beast was denied bail the following day, and the hearing was attacked by a similarly animalistic mutant known as Sabretooth. He was knocked out by guards, but Cyclops rescued him and took him to the School's infirmary, much to Wolverine's chagrin. Wolverine and Sabretooth had a history between them that convinced Wolverine that Sabretooth was not worth saving. Magneto assaulted a missile base, and Xavier sent Cyclops, Wolverine, and Storm to fend him off, but they were no match for his incredible power. He easily fended them off and launched the missiles, but Xavier transmitted Cerebro's electronic knowledge to Storm's mind, and she short-circuited the missiles and landed them in the ocean safely.[1]
