Beast (Earth-92131)
Beast is an American mutant and member of the X-Men. His name is both appropriate and ironic—though he possesses remarkable ape-like strength and agility, and is covered in distinctive blue fur, he is also a gifted scientist and enthusiastic patron of the arts. As such, he handles the bulk of the X-Men's scientific concerns.
Biography
In late 1992, the X-Men were thrust into mainstream attention following the introduction of the Sentinels, giant mutant-hunting robots, by Henry Gyrich's Mutant Control Agency (MCA). They took a young mutant named Jubilee into their protection after saving her from a Sentinel attack. Professor X tasked the team with infiltrating an MCA base and destroying mutant-registration records. The mission was successful, but Beast was captured and taken to federal prison, and Morph was apparently killed by an attacking Sentinel. Meanwhile, Jubilee was taken by Gyrich to the Sentinel factory in Detroit. The team trailed a Sentinel to the facility and broke inside, freeing Jubilee and destroying the robots there. Gyrich and his chief engineer Bolivar Trask were forced to flee. Jubilee officially joined the X-Men, moving into the school and out of her foster parents' home.[1]
Beast was held awaiting trial, but his cell was soon broken into by a strange mutant. Beast didn't recognize him, but deduced from his powers that it was Magneto, master of magnetism and zealot for mutant supremacy. Beast had heard of Magneto from stories told by Professor X. Magneto attempted to break him out, but Beast refused, much to his confusion. Beast explained that he fully intended on seeing his day in court to prove to the public that mutants were peaceful and that their cause for equality was righteous, and that Charles Xavier agreed with him. Magneto was shocked to hear Xavier's name and that he was responsible for the MCA attack. Magneto argued that the notion of a mutant being tried by homo sapiens was unjust to begin with, but failed to convince Beast to align with him as extensive guard reinforcements arrived. He left, quickly dismantling the firearms and tanks the guards had come with. Beast remained in his cell and attended his bail hearing as intended, where he gave an impassioned speech defending his actions and asserting mutantkind's benevolence. Nonetheless, he was denied bail, and even abused by several bailiffs. After the hearing, a large mutant named Sabretooth attacked, but was soon subdued by guards. Cyclops and Wolverine were in attendance, but only Cyclops helped defend Sabretooth and return his unconscious body to the School.[2]
