The X-Men were formed with the intent of defending innocent from evildoers—especially other, more malicious mutants—and began working toward that goal in late 1963 with their first field mission against the powerful magnetic manipulator known as Magneto. Magneto would go on to form the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, an alliance directly designed to oppose the X-Men, and indeed the Brotherhood would form the bulk of the X-Men's travails over the coming year. The X-Men also faced other villainous mutants like the Vanisher, the Blob, and Unus the Untouchable.
