Cyclops (Earth-92131)
Cyclops, born Scott Summers, is an American mutant and member of the X-Men. He is effectively the team leader, answering only to the X-Men's founder, Professor X. Cyclops's leadership is often called into question by Wolverine, with whom he has a frequently contentious rivalry. Cyclops's mutation results in powerful red energy beams bursting from his eyes at all times: he wears special glasses to block them, and a visor in battle to weaponize them. These beams are powered by the Sun, and so prolonged departure from sunlight renders his power inert.
Biography
In late 1992, the X-Men were thrust into mainstream attention following the introduction of the Sentinels, giant mutant-hunting robots, by Henry Gyrich's Mutant Control Agency (MCA). They took a young mutant named Jubilee into their protection after saving her from a Sentinel attack. Professor X tasked the team with infiltrating an MCA base and destroying mutant-registration records. Cyclops was worried that attacking a human facility could put the secretive X-Men at risk, but Xavier insisted that there was no other way. The mission was successful, but Beast was captured and taken to federal prison, and Morph was apparently killed by an attacking Sentinel. Wolverine tried to stay behind and possibly rescue Beast and Morph, but Cyclops ordered that the team escape while they had the chance. Back at the School, Wolverine angrily punched Cyclops in the stomach. Cyclops stood by his orders, but privately doubted himself. Jean Grey comforted him, reminding him of the difficulty of leadership in times of crisis. Meanwhile, Jubilee was taken by Gyrich to the Sentinel factory in Detroit. The team trailed a Sentinel to the facility and broke inside, freeing Jubilee and destroying the robots there. Gyrich and his chief engineer Bolivar Trask were forced to flee. Jubilee officially joined the X-Men, moving into the school and out of her foster parents' home.[1]
Cyclops and Wolverine attended Beast's bail hearing, where he was denied bail in spite of an impassioned plea for understanding. A large mutant called Sabretooth burst in and attacked the guards on hand, but they soon overwhelmed him and knocked him out with special laser guns. Cyclops defended him, but Wolverine stood back—he apparently had history with Sabretooth, and was perfectly willing to let him die. When Cyclops brought the unconscious Sabretooth back to the School's infirmary, Wolverine attempted to wheel his bed right out of the building, but was stopped by several on the team. Before this confrontation could go any further, an alert from a nearby missile base warned of Magneto's arrival. Xavier sent Wolverine, Cyclops, and Storm to face him, but they were no match for his incredible power. He easily fended them off and launched the missiles, but Xavier transmitted Cerebro's electronic knowledge to Storm's mind, and she short-circuited the missiles and landed them in the ocean safely.[2]
