Jump to navigation Jump to search

Wolverine is a Canadian mutant and member of the X-Men. He possesses a remarkable self-healing factor that makes him nearly impossible to kill and slows his aging process significantly. His skeleton is made of adamantium, and in battle he uses retractable "claws" that extend from between his knuckles. He also has an uncanny sense of smell, and consequently, is an elite tracker. He is a stubborn, independent thinker, and is frequently at odds with the team's leader, Cyclops.

Biography

Early life

Wolverine has a tumultuous past with a similarly ferocious mutant named Sabretooth, whom he alleges killed several of his friends unprovoked.

Under unknown circumstances, Wolverine joined the X-Men, facing considerable protest from the existing members. Xavier probed his mind and helped ease his latent torment, allowing him to cooperate in relative peace and fight alongside the rest of the team. Nonetheless, Wolverine remained combative and distant on the best of days.[1]

1992

In late 1992, the X-Men were thrust into mainstream attention following the introduction of the Sentinels, giant mutant-hunting robots, by Henry Gyrich's Mutant Control Agency (MCA). They took a young mutant named Jubilee into their protection after saving her from a Sentinel attack. Professor X tasked the team with infiltrating an MCA base and destroying mutant-registration records. The mission was successful, but Beast was captured and taken to federal prison, and Morph was apparently killed by an attacking Sentinel. Morph pushed Wolverine out of the way of a blast, sacrificing himself in the process. Wolverine tried to stay behind and possibly rescue Beast and Morph, but Cyclops ordered that the team escape while they had the chance. Back at the School, Wolverine angrily punched Cyclops in the stomach. Cyclops stood by his orders, but privately doubted himself. Meanwhile, Jubilee was taken by Gyrich to the Sentinel factory in Detroit. Wolverine stormed away from the School, but Cyclops convinced him to return at the prospect of taking down the Sentinels. The team trailed a Sentinel to the Detroit facility and broke inside, freeing Jubilee and destroying the robots there. Gyrich and his chief engineer Bolivar Trask were forced to flee. Jubilee officially joined the X-Men, moving into the school and out of her foster parents' home.[2]

The night before Beast's bail hearing, a powerful mutant and old foe of Xavier's named Magneto tried to free him and align with him, but Beast refused. Magneto was a zealot for mutant supremacy, aligned against Xavier's philosophy of peace with humankind. Cyclops and Wolverine attended Beast's hearing, where he was denied bail in spite of an impassioned plea for understanding. A large mutant called Sabretooth burst in and attacked the guards on hand, but they soon overwhelmed him and knocked him out with special laser guns. Cyclops defended him, but Wolverine stood back, perfectly willing to let his old foe die. When Cyclops brought the unconscious Sabretooth back to the School's infirmary, Wolverine attempted to wheel his bed right out of the building, but was stopped by several on the team. Before this confrontation could go any further, an alert from a nearby missile base warned of Magneto's arrival. Xavier sent Wolverine, Cyclops, and Storm to face him, but they were no match for his incredible power. He easily fended them off and launched the missiles, but Xavier transmitted Cerebro's electronic knowledge to Storm's mind, and she short-circuited the missiles and landed them in the ocean safely.[3]
