Jasper Sitwell, born December 8, 1973 in Norfolk, Virginia, was a double agent with Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. He was a consistent presence in many important S.H.I.E.L.D. affairs, including the emergence of early superheroes like Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk. He was killed in 2014 by the Winter Soldier after giving up crucial Hydra secrets to a team of heroes led by Captain America.

Biography

After the emergence of Iron Man in 2008, Jasper Sitwell was significantly involved in enacting S.H.I.E.L.D. (and secretly, Hydra) interests as more superpowered beings arrived. He trailed the Hulk across the United States and helped oversee the arrival of Mjölnir and Thor in New Mexico alongside Phil Coulson.[1] The World Security Council expressed interest in transferring the imprisoned Emil Blonsky to the Avenger Initiative, a decision that Sitwell and Coulson knew was ill-advised. The two devised a plan to send Tony Stark to "negotiate" Blonsky's transfer, knowing he would annoy General Thaddeus Ross enough to preclude Blonsky's release.[2]

During the invasion of Loki and his subsequent theft of the Tesseract, Sitwell assisted in tracking him down from Nick Fury's Helicarrier.[3] After the Battle of New York and Loki's defeat at the hands of the Avengers, Sitwell led a team of S.T.R.I.K.E. soldiers, including Brock Rumlow, in recovering Loki's scepter and the Mind Stone for Hydra (publicly, for S.H.I.E.L.D.).[4] In the days following the Battle of New York, S.H.I.E.L.D. recovered 46 Chitauri devices, but none of them were functional. They then received reports of two assailants robbing a series of banks along the east coast using a functioning and powerful Chitauri weapon. Sitwell was assigned by Felix Blake to track down those responsible, and did so in a motel in Florida. The two were couple Claire Wise and Benjamin Pollack. The ensuing scuffle destroyed the large pile of cash they had accumulated, and Sitwell quickly bound them and confiscated the weapon. The two were then very cooperative, and Pollack offered to demonstrate how he got the weapon to work. Recognizing their potential, Sitwell recruited them both to S.H.I.E.L.D.[5]

In 2014, Sitwell was assigned by World Security Council secretary and Hydra head Alexander Pierce to board the Lemurian Star and protect vital data on Project Insight. Nick Fury worked around this by having a group of pirates led by Georges Batroc hijack the ship and take those on board hostage. Sitwell was rescued by a S.T.R.I.K.E. team accompanied by Captain America and Black Widow. Following the apparent death of Nick Fury, Captain America became increasingly suspicious of Pierce and S.H.I.E.L.D. at large, and became a fugitive of the organization. Sitwell was directly involved in the effort to apprehend him, but was himself abducted by Cap, Widow, and their new ally known as the Falcon. He was coerced into revealing all he knew about Project Insight and Hydra's plans to kill millions of "threats" in one fell swoop. The three kept Sitwell in their custody as they drove down the road, but they were suddenly set upon by the legendary Hydra assassin known as the Winter Soldier. Winter Soldier pulled Sitwell from the car with his powerful metal arm and tossed him into oncoming traffic, killing him.[6]
