Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, commonly known as S.H.I.E.L.D., is an American espionage and counterterrorism organization, currently headed by Nick Fury. They are responsible for general defense of the United States, including repelling extraordinary threats like superpowered villains, and withholding important, secretive information from the public. Since 2008, Fury and Phil Coulson, one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top agents, have been key players in the organization's "Avenger Initiative," an operation aimed at creating a team of superheroes.[1]
