Mjölnir is the magical hammer wielded by Asgardian hero Thor. The details of its origin are unclear, though Odin claims that it was "forged in the heart of a dying star." Enchanted by Odin, Mjölnir can only be lifted by those worthy, and it is extremely selective. Once held, Mjölnir grants its user control of lightning and thunder, flight, and other potent abilities.

History

In 2010, Thor was in full possession of Mjölnir when he was about to be sworn in as Odin's successor to the Asgardian throne. Through a series of circumstances orchestrated by the jealous Loki, Thor was banished to Midgard and stripped of his power, including his right to hold Mjölnir. Mjölnir was itself thrown to Midgard, where it lay in the desert of New Mexico as locals came from all around in vain attempts to wrest it from the sand. It soon garnered governmental attention, as S.H.I.E.L.D. set up a small installation surrounding it to analyze it. Thor soon made his way to Mjölnir's location, fighting his way through S.H.I.E.L.D. guards to get to the heart of the installation, but he too failed to pull the hammer from its resting place. Later, even Loki attempted to pull Mjölnir out, and seemed visibly angered that he could not. Mjölnir remained in place until Thor proved himself worthy, volunteering his life to stop Loki's attack on the small town of Puente Antiguo. As Thor was on the brink of death from getting hit in the head by the Destroyer, Mjölnir flew from its crash site and into Thor's hands, returning his power to him once more.[1]

In 2015, at an Avengers party, members of the team[note 1] each tried to lift Mjölnir, but all failed. Later, the newly synthesized lifeform known as Vision allied himself with the Avengers. He easily lifted Mjölnir, instantly proving both his power and benevolence.[2]
