Cyclops, born Scott Summers, is an American mutant hero and a member of the X-Men. Next to Charles Xavier, Cyclops is the senior member of the team, and is responsible for acclimating new members. His mutation causes him to uncontrollably produce energy blasts from his eyes, which forces him to wear protective glasses at all times. In battle, he uses a special visor to trigger the release of this energy, which can be controlled with buttons on the visor and the palms of his hands.

Biography

Scott Summers was one of the first two mutants recruited by Charles Xavier into the X-Men along with Marvel Girl, with whom he formed a playful, flirting relationship. He was responsible for assigning codenames to early recruits Beast, Colossus, and Storm in 2001. When the five of them were sent on what proved to be a perilous recruiting mission for Bobby Drake, Cyclops proved a critical part of the team, providing tactical leadership and obliterating the gigantic head of a Sentinel with a single energy blast. Drake was successfully protected and recruited, adopting the moniker of Iceman.[1] After the X-Men saved the president's daughter from the Brotherhood of Mutants, Cyclops witnessed Marvel Girl kissing newest member Wolverine in the school garden, apparently killing their own burgeoning romance. He also began to resent that his teammates' lives were being risked for those of homo sapiens, and that they were then expected to negotiate with the government that had indiscriminately killed their brethren. He stormed out of the Xavier School, traveling to the Savage Land and signing on with the Brotherhood.[2]

Cyclops quickly soured on Magneto and his Brotherhood, however. He and the other Brotherhood members were sent on a terrorist mission to London, where he was told they would bomb a pair of buildings—&Parliament and MI6—with sufficient warning for their occupants to escape. But the bombs were detonated early on Quicksilver's order, killing the people inside. Back in the Savage Land, Cyclops confronted Magneto, who assured him that it was for the greater good: evening the odds for the travesties that humans had committed. Before anything could come of their disagreement, a massive fleet of Sentinels arrived and began killing mutants en masse. Magneto deflected the attack before it could wipe out the island altogether, magnetically disassembling the Sentinels and reprogramming them to target humans instead of mutants before sending them back to Washington, D.C. where they came from.[3] Realizing the catastrophic potential of this attack, Cyclops notified Xavier and sought to return to Washington himself to defend the city. He convinced Quicksilver, who had begun to resent Magneto himself, to take him there, and the two both fought alongside the X-Men against Magneto and the Sentinels. In the end, Magneto was seemingly killed by Xavier, and much of the city was saved. Cyclops rejoined the X-Men, remorseful for his earlier defection.[4]
