Dr. Franklin Storm was an American former surgeon and the father of famous heroes Sue and Johnny Storm. When Sue was a teenager and Johnny just a boy, Franklin and his wife Mary were in a bad car accident that left Mary in critical condition. Franklin attempted to operate on her, but she died through no fault of his own. Franklin went into a deep depression and racked up a great deal of gambling debts. He got into a fight with some of his creditors, a gun was pulled, Franklin tried to struggle it away, and accidentally shot and killed one of them. He was arrested, convicted of manslaughter, and sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.

While Franklin was in prison, Sue and Johnny became world-renowned heroes as part of the Fantastic Four. In late 1964, Franklin broke out of prison—soon after, Sue became critically injured after a run-in with the Mole Man, and Dr. Storm spontaneously showed up at the hospital offering to operate on her. Knowing his reputation for precision, the doctor on call allowed it, and Franklin saved Sue's life. After a brief reunion, Franklin returned to prison.[1] Back in prison, Franklin was later accosted by a mysterious alien visitor who beamed directly into his cell, the Super-Skrull. Franklin himself was beamed away to the Skrull home planet as the Super-Skrull stole Franklin's image and attempted to use it to deceive the Fantastic Four. The Four's leader Mr. Fantastic eventually saw through this guise, demanding that the Super-Skrull return home and give back the real Franklin. However, the nefarious Skrulls sent Franklin back with a laser weapon attached to his chest that would fire upon his arrival, intending to kill the Fantastic Four on sight. Instead, Franklin took the brunt of the blow when he returned to Earth, sacrificing himself to save his children and their allies. With his last breath, Dr. Storm told Sue and Johnny how proud he was of their bravery and valor, and looked forward to seeing Mary again.[2]
