The Destroyer was an automaton made of metal and fire, created to guard the treasure room of Asgard from intruders, and more generally to carry out the will of Asgard's king. To that end, in 2010 it killed a trio of invading Frost Giants. Later, after Loki had claimed the throne, he sent the Destroyer to Midgard to kill his brother Thor and destroy anything in its path. Unexpectedly, Thor—who had been stripped of his powers after being deemed unworthy by Odin—voluntarily surrendered his life to the machine in exchange for ceasing the attack on innocent people. The Destroyer gave Thor a heavy, metal slap to the face, sending him flying and seemingly killing him. But in that moment, Thor proved himself worthy, and was soon again in possession of Mjölnir and his powers. Now fully capable, Thor easily destroyed the Destroyer in moments.[1] Its remnants were taken into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody soon after.[2] The ultimate fate of the Destroyer's remains following the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. is unknown.
