Biography

Mentallo was born with a mutation that granted him various mental abilities, including telepathy and the power to project his thoughts into images. He put these powers to good use as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., but his ambition got the better of him. Mentallo tried to attain greater power within the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, but he was caught and forced to flee. He went into hiding, using his psychic powers to evade S.H.I.E.L.D.'s pursuit at every turn. One night, as he was laying in bed, he received a mental impulse notifying him that S.H.I.E.L.D. was moving forward with "Operation Brain Blast," a project that would effectively replicate his powers technologically. Afraid, Mentallo decided that he needed to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D. before they could catch up with him. To assist him in this task, he set his sights upon the Fixer, a criminal known for his on-the-spot engineering prowess. Mentallo "saw" Fixer escape from prison using an intensely convoluted construction from the limited supplies in his cell, and was convinced that the two could do anything together.[1] Soon, the Fixer hid out in an advanced undersea base littered with surrounding traps. Mentallo easily maneuvered through them with his psychic ability, gaining entry and impressing the Fixer. Mentallo offered to team up and take down S.H.I.E.L.D., and the Fixer agreed. The two used a huge drilling machine belonging to Fixer to access S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters from underground. Mentallo knew that the Fixer couldn't have built such a monstrosity on his own, and Fixer cryptically explained that he had help from "them." Soon after penetrating the facility, they were met by agents led by S.H.I.E.L.D.'s director, Nick Fury. The duo used special shells that contained "element Z," which knocked its victims stiff and unconscious. They took Fury captive, equipping him with an "electronic mask" that would allow them to rewrite his brain structure and force him to follow their orders.[2]
