The Supreme Headquarters International Espionage Law-Enforcement Division, commonly known as S.H.I.E.L.D., is an international defense organization devoted to protecting the world from significant threats, especially Hydra. Nick Fury is the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Tony Stark heads up their special weapons division.[1]
