Not to be confused with Yogi Dakor.

Dakor the Magician, birth name unknown, is a magician and detective from Pluckley, Kent, England. He and Alexander Williams[1] run a private investigation agency. Magically, Dakor is primarily capable of minor illusions that he uses to distract his foes at key moments. Exactly what led to Dakor pursuing his odd choice of combined occupations is unclear.

Biography

Dakor's first known case concerned a valuable but dangerous gem. On a quiet day in their office, Dakor and his Williams were suddenly approached by a dying man talking of the Blooded Ruby of Chung.[note 1] He had been coming to them with the ruby for protection, but was shot and robbed of it on the way. He told them to contact his father, and died of his wounds moments later. Dakor identified the man as John Hargate, son of George Hargate. They contacted George, who explained that it must have been John's one-time best friend Tom Denver who carried out the murder, having fallen victim to the ruby's supposed mind-altering effects. The ruby had originally been embedded in the eye of a statue of Chung, an Asian deity. Dakor and Williams tracked Denver to France, where he had joined the French Foreign Legion. The Legion refused to turn Denver in despite the charges against him, so Dakor opted to join the Legion himself. Dakor indeed found Denver in the Legion, but wasn't able to steal the ruby from him under the watchful eye of the guards. Soon a group of Tuareg raiders attacked their outpost and captured both Dakor and Denver, leaving them in the same cell. The Tuaregs overheard them talk about the ruby and interrogated them. Dakor magically convinced them that the gem was cursed, and they agreed to free him, but killed Denver anyway. Dakor claimed the ruby and returned it to its home in Burma.[note 2][1][2]

Some weeks later, Dakor received word from the United States government that a British consul in Singapore, Anderson Murdock,[1] had been captured by Chinese bandits. Dakor accepted the mission to rescue the consul, and upon arriving in Singapore learned that the bandits had taken him to Borneo. Disguised as a poor peddler, Dakor went to Borneo and infiltrated the ranks of the bandits, led by Mungo, successfully freeing Murdock and escaping the hostile bandits through copious use of magic.[3] Dakor then rescued his friend's daughter Anna Twisdon, who had been abducted by Balus of Nordu and hypnotized into believing she was their goddess.[4]

Notes

  1. Also spelled "Kung."
  2. In the original story, it's not entirely clear where the ruby is from, though there is a degree of implication toward it being China. It was later retconned to be explicitly from Burma.
