Scorpion
The Scorpion, born Mac Gargan, is an American villain and former private investigator in New York City.
Biography
In late 1964, Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson hired Gargan to tail one of his freelance photographers, Peter Parker, to figure out exactly how he got such high-quality, up-close photos of Spider-Man and his foes. Jameson soon lost interest in this however, and decided to pay Gargan for a different job. They went to scientist Farley Stillwell, who had refcently made news for studying animal biological alterations. Jameson paid Stillwell and Gargan each ten-thousand dollars for Stillwell to make Gargan stronger than Spider-Man, for whom Jameson had developed an obsessive hatred. Gargan eagerly accepted with so much money at stake. Stillwell decided to model the new Gargan off of a different arachnid, the scorpion, and even constructed a mechanical, stinging tail to attach to him. The process was a complete success: Gargan became profoundly stronger and more agile, and Stillwell outfitted him with a full, green suit to christen him the Scorpion. Stillwell warned him that he wasn't adjusted to his new form yet, but "the Scorpion" felt unnervingly confident. Scorpion soon confronted Spider-Man and quickly defeated him, overpowering him with his immense strength.
Scorpion became even stronger and more confident, and began committing crimes across the city. Stillwell tracked him down and tried to convince him to take a serum to reverse the effects, warning that his sense of right and wrong would continue to deteriorate. But Scorpion was too far gone, and brashly blew him off. The desperate Stillwell attempted to follow Scorpion up a building, but slipped and fell to his death. Spider-Man recovered and fought him again, but Scorpion once more took him down. Scorpion attacked Jameson in the Daily Bugle offices, looking to take out the only person left who knew his true identity. But Spider-Man recovered yet again, and this time used his superior agility and intellect to take down the Scorpion and leave him caught in his webbing for the police.[1]
Scorpion escaped from prison several months later, and immediately set his sights on Jameson. He cornered him in the Daily Bugle offices, but Spider-Man quickly arrived to defend him. The two fought through the office, utterly ransacking it, and out across the city rooftops and to the riverside. Scorpion's escape was a short-lived one, as Spider-Man managed to defeat him and web him up for police retrieval once more.[2]
