Dr. Farley Stillwell was an American scientist in New York City who in 1964 was specializing in animal biological alterations. He was approached by J. Jonah Jameson, who offered him ten-thousand dollars to produce such an alteration in a human, specifically one that would make them stronger than Spider-Man. The subject in question was Mac Gargan, whom Jameson was also paying the same amount. Stillwell had moral qualms with the project, but found himself unable to turn down Jameson's grand offer. Stillwell decided to model the new Gargan off of a different arachnid, the scorpion, and even constructed a mechanical, stinging tail to attach to him. The process was a complete success: Gargan became profoundly stronger and more agile, and Stillwell outfitted him with a full, green suit to christen him the Scorpion. Stillwell warned him that he wasn't adjusted to his new form yet, but Gargan felt unnervingly confident.

Upon further study, Stillwell discovered that Gargan was going to grow even stronger, and in turn his malicious nature would grow, posing a potentially grave threat to humanity. By now, Scorpion had already fought and defeated Spider-Man, and was now running rampant across the city. Stillwell developed a serum to reverse Gargan's alterations, and managed to find him in an alleyway. He tried to convince him to take the serum, but Gargan was by now obsessed with his increasing power, and blew Stillwell off. Gargan scaled a building to get away from Stillwell, but the desperate scientist attempted to follow him. Unable to keep up with the Scorpion's agility, Stillwell fell from the building's third floor to his death.[1]
