The Master Mold was a large, sentient robot constructed by Bolivar Trask. Trask created the Master Mold to be the overseer of the Sentinels, a legion of mutant-hunting robots.

Trask believed that mutants would conquer humanity if left unchecked, and looked to use the Sentinels to destroy them. However, the Master Mold proved to be more intelligent than Trask intended: it determined that it and its Sentinels should rule over humanity and "protect" them. When Trask first unveiled the Sentinels on live television in 1965, they disobeyed his commands and instead took him to the Master Mold's facility hidden underneath a grassy hill in rural New York. Though Master Mold possessed the power neeeded to create more Sentinels, it did not have Trask's necessary know-how. Realizing how wrong he'd been, Trask refused to create more Sentinels, but Master Mold threatened to attack humanity directly if he refused. Mutant heroes the X-Men tried to infiltrate Master Mold's facility, but found themselves captured by the Sentinels. At the critical moment, Trask was able to attack Master Mold's ionic power source, destroying it and killing himself in the ensuing explosion. The X-Men escaped the exploding facility in time to save themselves, leaving Master Mold and the rest of the Sentinels apparently in ruin.[1][2][3]
