The Hulk, legal name Dr. Robert Bruce Banner[1] and also known as the Incredible Hulk, is an American scientist and hero, transformed by gamma radiation into a large, green monster. The inventor of the gamma bomb (or G-bomb), Bruce Banner suffered severe irradiation during the bomb's first test. He now changes between Banner and the Hulk from day to night, respectively. The Hulk possesses superhuman strength, agility, and resilience, including a complete imperviousness to gunfire. While Banner's motivations are essentially benevolent, Hulk is often uncontrollable and as such frequently finds himself at odds with other well-intentioned entities, especially the United States military, and in particular General Thunderbolt Ross. Betty Ross, the general's daughter, has had a tentatively romantic relationship with Banner. He was briefly a founding member of the Avengers.

Bruce Banner became the Hulk during a test of his gamma bomb as a result of rescuing the young Rick Jones, who had wandered into the testing area. Banner miraculously survived, but found that he would, seemingly at random, transform into a large, immensely powerful man that came to be known as the Hulk. Jones came to be Banner's only confidant on matters of the Hulk, helping him recover following a dangerous transformation. Banner's boss, army general Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, frequently came into contact with the Hulk and his devastation, and made it his goal to take the Hulk down for good. Banner became friends with Thaddeus's daughter Betty Ross, and the two gradually developed a great deal affection for one another, but Bruce's anxiety about his identity repeatedly came between them. For the first few years, Banner's control over the Hulk remained tenuous, and he would often transform back and forth at inopportune times. The Hulk was incredibly helpful in the right situation, and this power led to his helping found the original Avengers alongside Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and the Wasp, though his involvement in the group didn't last very long. Hulk found himself at odds with a number of dangerous villains, as well as potent heroes, notably acting as the catalyst in a conflict between the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.
