The Green Goblin, born Norman Osborn, is an American villain and former corporate businessman. The former head of Osborn Industries, Norman was transformed into a green, hulking beast after attempting to replicate the incident that gave Peter Parker his Spider-Man powers. A shrewd and intelligent man normally, Osborn became an impulsive, mindless creature after the experiment, seemingly intent only on getting a form of revenge against Parker. He is the father of Harry Osborn and widower of Martha Osborn.

Biography

2000-2001

In late 2000, Osborn Industries (OI) was developing Oz, a "wonder drug" with unknown properties. Norman Osborn had injected a test spider with the drug; the spider escaped its enclosure, and during a high-school field trip to Osborn Industries, student Peter Parker was bitten by it. He ended up in the hospital, where Osborn ordered Shaw to steal a vial of his blood. Examining the blood, Osborn determined that Parker was terminal. He ordered Shaw to expedite Parker's death, determining that outside examination would potentially lead back to Osborn Industries and destroy the Oz program. Shaw attempted to run down Parker, but the latter's newfound superhuman agility allowed him to evade the attempt and escape with his life. Osborn nixed any future attempts to kill Parker, and decided to study the effects that Oz had had on him instead.[1]

Through his son Harry, Norman invited Parker on a tour of Osborn Industries; this was supposedly a way of apologizing for the spider incident, but in fact a means of obtaining another sample of Parker's blood for further study. Otto Octavius, one of OI's top scientists, unsubtly took a sample from Parker's arm during the tour, causing him to flee in panic. Examining the new sample, Osborn determined that not only was Parker not dying, but he was in fact getting stronger.[2] He decided to have the drug injected in himself, hoping to gain extraordinary powers of his own.[3] But the experiment went awry, exploding violently and killing several staff members. Harry was there, in spite of Norman instructing his staff otherwise, and witnessed the disaster. Norman was transformed into a large monster seemingly devoid of reason, and couldn't be found following the experiment.[4]

The following night, Osborn returned home in his new form, killing his wife Martha in a large fire. It's unclear if this was intentional or a tragic accident brought about by instinct. Harry witnessed this as well, and came to believe that Norman did it on purpose and was coming for him next.[5] Norman later attacked the local high school, causing most of the students to flee. His target was Peter Parker, who had since fully assumed the identity of Spider-Man, costume and all. Osborn and Spider-Man fought for some time, neither ceding defeat, until a police helicopter intervened as they fought high atop a bridge. They shot Osborn down, sending him plummeting into the ocean below. The creature was incapacitated, but not killed. Following the attack, Harry believed that he was Norman's intended target, and was visibly distraught and inconsolable.[6][7]
