Frederick Swabert is an American man and the heir to a fortune courtesy of his father. During the financial crisis of 1907, Frederick's father withdrew all of his money from the bank and kept it hidden in his home—a hiding place that he took to his grave. In 1940, Frederick received death threats from unidentified criminals, demanding Mr. Swabert's fortune. Frederick took the threat to the police commissioner; the commissioner at the time was meeting with Dennis Burton, who used the information Frederick provided (as his vigilante alterego, Purple Mask) to identify and thwart the blackmailers, Renard Harr and Maurice Bellos.[1]
