Dr. Vernon van Dyne was an American scientist and the father of the Wasp, Janet van Dyne. In 1963, Dr. van Dyne devised a long-distance gamma-ray beam intended to facilitate communication with alien races. He approached Henry Pym with this project, but Pym was uninterested. When van Dyne tested out his beam in his laboratory, a bizarre creature appeared and killed him. It was Dr. van Dyne's death that inspired Pym—secretly the hero Ant-Man—to recruit his daughter Janet as his teammate, the Wasp.[1]
