Van Eyck

Dr. Van Eyck, full name unknown, was an ophthalmologist and surgeon who by 1965 had apparently pioneered a groundbreaking technique for curing blindness. That year, after having been living in the United States, he was taken to Lichtenbad by that country's dictator of a duke, Klaus Kruger. Soon after, the American lawyer Matt Murdock came to Lichtenbad, hoping to have his blindness potentially cured by Van Eyck. Murdock was also secretly the hero Daredevil, and upon realizing the state the country was in, he set about liberating the people and prisoners of Lichtenbad. This mission led to a direct confrontation with Kruger, who desperately activated a nuclear device to annihilate all of humanity upon realizing he could not beat Daredevil. As Van Eyck watched Daredevil fight, he realized, strangely, that he and Murdock were the same man. Van Eyck managed to deactivate Kruger's device, suffering a great deal of irradiation and dying in the process. Kruger grew increasingly reckless fighting Daredevil, and fell off of his castle's battlements to his death.
