Valkyrie (vehicle)
The Valkyrie was a large aircraft utilized by Johann Schmidt in Earth-199999 during World War II. He attempted to use it to carry out his final mission to bomb and destroy many of the world's most populous cities, but was thwarted by the efforts of Captain America and his allies. Schmidt and Cap had their final confrontation aboard the Valkyrie, where Schmidt accidentally used the Tesseract to send himself into deep space. The Valkyrie remained on course to bomb New York City, and Captain America was forced to crash it into the frozen sea below. Cap himself was preserved alive but in stasis for several decades until the Valkyrie was recovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2011.[1] The name "Valkyrie" carried a great significance for Schmidt, as it evokes not only Norse mythology, but the Wagnerian operas inspired by such. Valkyries were known for shepherding fallen warriors to their end, a connection that proved darkly appropriate for Schmidt as well. The Valkyries in fact did exist, and one of them yet lived.
