The Stranger is an alien being belonging to a race who scours the universe studying mutants of various species. He possesses a great deal of significant powers, including a petrification ray, shapeshifting, and the ability to create an invisible cone of energy for transport.

In 1965, the Stranger arrived on Earth seeking out mutants of the human race, and soon came into contact with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants led by Magneto. They took him to be a mutant himself, and tried to recruit him to their cause. The Stranger was angered by Mastermind's illusions and blasted him with a petrification ray, turning him to entirely solid matter on a molecular level. The X-Men soon arrived to try to speak with the Stranger before he joined the Brotherhood, and the two sides fought. Stranger lost interest and went to leave, but Magneto insisted on coming with him. The two and Toad escaped in an energy cone and fled to a remote wooded area. There, Stranger revealed his true nature to the mutants and wrapped them in special cocoons. The X-Men arrived soon after, but couldn't stop the Stranger from flying into space, bringing Magneto and Toad with him to his home planet.[1]
