Second-Story Sam is an American man and former small-time criminal. In late 1964, Sam attempted to rob an apartment in New Jersey, but escaped out the window when its occupants returned. On the building's ledge, he found that a giant plant had grown across the city block, and followed its leaves to another apartment wherein an unmasked, normal-sized Giant-Man lay unconscious. Taking a business card, Sam found his true identity to be that of biochemist Henry Pym. Seeing a great opportunity, Sam procured his Giant-Man costume and stuffed Pym in the closet. Sam was now able to use Giant-Man's powers as his own, though they were difficult to control as they were operated simply by the mind. Janet van Dyne, secretly Giant-Man's ally the Wasp, returned to the apartment, forcing Sam to dash out the door to her confusion. Sam quickly used the costume to enhance his life of crime, attempting to rob a jewelry store, but soon set off the alarm after bungling his changing of size. Hiding among the gems, Sam was soon confronted by the Wasp, who demanded to know why she had taken Pym's costume. Soon, Pym contacted them both through their cybernetic helmets, and the distraction allowed Sam to escape. However, Pym sent one of his loyal flying ants to retrieve the tiny Sam and carry him back to Pym's apartment. Sam attempted to fight back, but Pym easily incapacitated him, reclaimed his suit, and used a memory-loss serum to make him forget Giant-Man's identity and his own life of crime.[1]
