Maria Pym, née Trovaya, was a Hungarian woman and the deceased wife of Henry Pym. The daughter of a dissident against communism, Maria Trovaya escaped Soviet Hungary to the United States, where she married scientist Henry Pym. The two later honeymooned back in Hungary, recognizing the danger but believing the past to be behind them—nonetheless, Maria was captured and killed by communist agents. For years to come, Henry recalled the words Maria's father would tell her, "Go to the ants, thou sluggard;"[note 1] he took this very literally, becoming inspired to fight crime by shrinking himself to the size of an ant as the hero Ant-Man.[1]

Notes

  1. Maria's original words were, "Go to the ants, thou dullard," but this is a slight misrepresentation of the Bible verse Proverbs 6:6, which Henry recalls correctly.
