Lucky Lewis
Nick "Lucky" Lewis, also known as the Crime Master, was an American crime lord in New York City. He created the masked persona of the Crime Master in 1965, apparently as an intimidation tactic to more easily take over the city's numerous crime organizations. He developed a tenuous partnership with the Green Goblin, who had recently been trying to do much the same thing. The two revealed their secret identities to each other, but this intended reassurance ultimately proved to be a sort of mutually assured destruction: neither man could expose the other or effectively expose themselves in the process. Lewis eventually abandoned Goblin and began intimidating various major criminals into following him. Spider-Man attempted to capture the Crime Master, but Lewis remained one step ahead at all times. Frederick Foswell, a reporter for the Daily Bugle and former crime lord known as the Big Man, was also on Lewis's case. Foswell correctly suspected the Crime Master's identity, and used himself as bait to build evidence.
Eventually, Lewis called a large-scale meeting at a pier on the west side, where he was to declare his dominion over the New York crime world. However, at the critical moment, Green Goblin returned with Spider-Man's unconscious body and laid it on the ground for all to see. Instantly, the criminals in attendance turned allegiance to the Goblin. They chained up Spider-Man, but he soon recovered and began to fight back. Police also arrived, having been tipped off by Foswell in disguise. Goblin fled on his glider while Crime Master ran into the sewers, escaping Spider-Man with a nerve-gas bomb. Police eventually caught up to Lewis on a rooftop, where he resisted arrest and pulled his gun. Police shot and killed him, and Lewis spent his dying breaths trying and failing to reveal Green Goblin's identity.[1][2]
