Dr. Hjarmal Svenson[1] is a Norwegian surgeon and medical researcher specializing in lung restoration. In the mid-1960s, while on an expedition to the North Pole to research respiration in arctic regions, Svenson was approached by a group of aliens, Kallusians, who were secretly living deep underground. They took him to their leader, Ogor, who explained that his people could not breathe Earth's air, and were running short on their supply of their own air from the planet Kallu. They had fled their home planet to escape a long-running, interstellar war. Svenson helped them create a sustainable biosphere in their underground city, and provided them with filtration masks to allow them to breathe on the surface. He continued to live and work with the Kallusians underground to help them sustain their new way of life.

In 1965, the Avengers tracked down Svenson. The Wasp was in the hospital with a gun-inflicted punctured lung, and they understood that Svenson was the perfect man to operate on her. The Kallusians were hesitant to let Svenson go, but an orbital approach by their rival species forced their hand. They fled the planet, taking the fight to their enemies, allowing Svenson to go with the Avengers back to the Wasp's hospital bed in New Jersey. The operation was a success, and Wasp made a full recovery.[2]
