Biography

By 2001, Dr. Henry Pym was working as a scientist for S.H.I.E.L.D., conducting various undercover scientific experiments. In particular, after S.H.I.E.L.D. took custody of the comatose scientist Otto Octavius, Pym was the head scientist responsible for researching the effects of the mechanical arms that had fused to Octavius' body—to wit, that they had interacted with his body in such a way as to effectively become four fully functioning additional limbs. When Octavius awoke, he was furious that the scientists had studied the arms rather than trying to remove them from his body. He lashed out, killing one of the other scientists and escaping the facility; it is unclear how, but Pym managed to escape unscathed.[1] Some time afterward, Dr. Pym was assigned to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Ultimates project as its head scientist, replacing Bruce Banner after the latter's complications as the Hulk. Pym was tasked with devising technological adaptations for new superhumans: he came up with a pheromone-based communication system that allowed him to command ants, as well as a way of enlarging himself to nearly sixty feet tall, the basis of which was his wife Janet's secret mutant ability to shrink to an inch tall. Pym devised the "Giant-Man" superhero persona, a complement to Janet's Wasp.[2]
