Biography

Matt Murdock was an established lawyer and vigilante in New York by 2001, when he served as the attorney for police detective Bruce Greenwood. Greenwood was the former partner of ex-cop Frank Castle, who had since become a vigilante known as the Punisher. During a meeting in Murdock's office, Greenwood relayed the fact that Castle, who had recently escaped from Ryker's Island, was seeking vengeance on the corrupt officers who had killed his family, including Greenwood. As if on cue, a bullet came through Murdock's window, killing Greenwood. Murdock suited up and went to the rooftops, where he was confronted by Punisher with a gun.[1]

Daredevil tried to convince Punisher to give up his murderous pursuit, but was unsuccessful. Punisher essentially told Daredevil to back off, and escaped by using gunfire as a distraction. Daredevil later caught up with Punisher on another rooftop, preparing to kill Artie Jillette, who had spearheaded the corruption in the police department and who was primarily responsible for Punisher's family's deaths. Daredevil tried once more to talk him down, and was apparently succeeding before Spider-Man suddenly appeared and knocked Punisher unconscious. Spider-Man acted on instinct, seeing a man with a gun standing over a defenseless person. Jillette ran off in the confusion. Daredevil angrily scolded the young hero, commanding him to take Punisher and his gun to the police. He did so, as Daredevil chased after Jillette. He was able to catch him and bring him to justice, and both Jillette and Punisher were returned to captivity at Ryker's Island. Punisher would have been destined for long-term solitary confinement, but Murdock lobbied with the city to keep him in the general population.[2]
