Anton Vanko (Earth-199999)

Anton Vanko[note 1] was a Soviet American physicist who worked alongside Howard Stark on the invention of the arc reactor in the 1960s. He in fact worked for Stark Industries dating back to at least 1946, when he was a respected scientist in the organization.[1] He had defected to America from the Soviet Union, but was deported in 1967 after accusations of espionage.[2] In 2010, Vanko died in poverty, leaving behind his son Ivan, also a physicist. Ivan harbored an extreme desire for revenge against Howard's son Tony Stark, also known as the hero Iron Man, for profiting off of Anton's creation.[3]
