Akela Amador, born June 14, 1983, is a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who after being presumed dead was extorted by an unknown entity into committing various crimes for several years. During her time with S.H.I.E.L.D., she was a protege of Phil Coulson, who believed her to be extremely talented, but ruthlessly individualistic, and thus attempted to make her more of a team player. She was presumed dead after a team op in 2006 assaulting a Vanchat gulag, but Coulson suspected that she was alive. Indeed, she had been captured and imprisoned in a mine in Shaanxi, China for four years, having gone blind in her right eye. She was "rescued" by an unknown organization, who restored vision to her eye by installing it with a camera and a "fail-safe" that would kill her if she didn't follow their orders. For another three years, Amador carried out crimes for the organization, leading to a series of diamond heists in 2013. These were used to pay for a valuable access card to a research facility in Minsk. Amador discovered that she was being followed by agents from S.H.I.E.L.D., and (presumably on her handler's orders) rammed a van of theirs into a ditch. She was later confronted by Coulson and fellow agent Melinda May; Coulson tranquilized her and took her into custody. S.H.I.E.L.D. hijacked her eye's feed and fed it into a special pair of glasses instead, allowing her to escape detection from her handler without raising suspicion. They removed the volatile eye from her head as agent Grant Ward followed through with Amador's mission, discovering the object of the organization's interest, a series of bizarre glyphs written on a chalkboard. Amador was jailed for her crimes, but Coulson vowed to testify on her behalf.[1] Coulson's team went on to learn that Amador had been controlled by Project Centipede, and more broadly Hydra.[2]
