Abraham Erskine was an American scientist. During World War II, Erskine developed the super-soldier serum, a formula designed to turn normal humans into ultra-powerful warriors. The United States government tested the serum on the young, weak recruit Steve Rogers, and it worked perfectly, making Rogers far more strong and agile. Erskine was shot and killed during the experiment by a Nazi spy observer, who attempted to steal Erskine's formula. The spy died in a crash as he attempted to flee, and all traces of Erskine's formula were lost as a result. Rogers went on to become the heroic Captain America, an unmatched asset for the Allied war effort and one of the universe's greatest heroes for decades to come.[1]
