Yggdrasil[note 1] is a large, magical tree that is central to Asgardian cosmology. Its precise nature and purpose is unknown, but it is believed to be the central connecting point for the Nine Realms. According to legend, in ancient times, Odin took a branch from Yggdrasil, which Thor then took to Mirmir. King Mirmir used the branch to stir his "mystic fountain," which fed the oceans of Midgard, thereby watering a pair of trees planted by Odin and turning them into the first humans, Aske and Embla.[1]
