Queen Mary was the Queen of England and Ireland from 1553 until her death in 1558. She notably attempted to reverse Protestant practices undertaken by her father Henry VIII and brother Edward VI in favor of a fervently Catholic state. She burned hundreds of Protestant dissidents at the stake, earning the moniker Bloody Mary. She was succeeded by her half-sister Elizabeth, who returned England to its Protestant ways.[1]
