Professor Phineas Thomas Horton[1] was an American scientist known for creating the original Human Torch. After displaying his "synthetic man" to his peers, Horton realized the potential danger of his creation and tried to seal him in cement, but Torch was able to escape. Torch was eventually able to control his flame powers, and Horton attempted to use Torch for his own gain. But Torch firmly refused, flying through the ceiling of Horton's home and setting it aflame.[2] Horton apparently died in the resulting fire—whether or not Torch intended for this to happen is unclear.[3]
