Jack Frost, born Gregor Shapanka in Szombathely, Hungary,[1] is a scientist and villain known for his special suit that covers him in ice and grants him the power to manipulate ice and freeze others. In effect, this makes him an artificial, villainous version of the hero Iceman.

Biography

By 1963, Gregor Shapanka was a respected scientist working under Tony Stark—secretly the hero Iron Man. Late that year, Shapanka broke into Stark’s underground vault in his main plant in Flushing, but was interrupted by Iron Man himself. Realizing he proved no match against the hero, Shapanka tried to split with Iron Man the fortune that they would make from Stark’s secret formulas. Iron Man obviously refused, throwing Shapanka into the vault and leaving to “get” Tony Stark. Stark and security forces soon arrived, and instead of giving him to the police, Stark decided to simply fire Shapanka in recognition of his great work with the company. Stark told Shapanka to leave before he got “cold feet” about releasing him, strangely inspiring the mad scientist. Shapanka had been privately working on preserving living subjects in ice, and used this latest inspiration to develop a special suit that would freeze his body, ostensibly making him impervious to outside damage. It would also allow him to freeze targets other than himself. After a week of development, Shapanka began a life of crime, robbing banks across New York and earning the name “Jack Frost” from newspapers. Now well practiced, Frost initiated his final plan, attacking Stark’s plant in earnest. Stark defended it as Iron Man, defeating Frost with a miniature furnace in his belt and revealing him as Shapanka. This time, Stark readily allowed Shapanka to be taken away by the authorities.[2]
