Immortus is a mysterious man who rules Limbo. Virtually nothing is known about him except that he is capable of traveling through time at will and desires large-scale conquest.

Biography

In late 1964, Immortus sought out the Masters of Evil, interested in joining their fight against the Avengers, stalwart defender heroes of the period. Apparently to locate them, Immortus probed the mind of the Enchantress, and she was unable to resist his sudden and powerful call. Immortus materialized at their position and explained his motivations. The Masters' leader Baron Zemo insisted that Immortus prove himself on his own and destroy one of the Avengers—Immortus boldly claimed that he would destroy them all instead. Having long observed the Avengers from throughout time and space, Immortus knew to target their young ally Rick Jones as a way of getting to them. He baited Jones to him by taking out an advertisement on the back of a comic book promising superpowers. Upon Jones's arrival, Immortus summoned a phantom resembling Attila the Hun to restrain him and imprisoned Jones in 18th-century England. Soon, Captain America and the other Avengers arrived, and used a series of other phantoms modeled after legendary figures to pair off with the (male members of) the Avengers one-on-one. Giant-Man faced Goliath, Iron Man faced Merlin (not the true Merlin who had faced Thor in the past), and Thor faced Hercules. Each Avenger won their battle, and the angry Immortus pulled Captain America with him into the past, back to London where Jones was being held, daring him to rescue his friend as English soldiers battled the frightening newcomer. In the end, Cap was able to fight through and save Jones, and the strangely honorable Immortus returned him to his own time, retreating for the time being. The Masters of Evil fought the Avengers in a failing effort, and the Enchantress reversed time to just before they had met Immortus. This time she was able to resist his call, and Immortus's plan never occurred. As a result, the Masters of Evil are the only ones with memory of these events ever taking place.[1]
