Heimdall is the Asgardian keeper of the Bifrost, a post he has held almost continuously for centuries. He is capable of seeing virtually everything that happens across the Nine Realms.

Biography

After an untold amount of time serving as the keeper of the Bifrost, in May of 2010 Heimdall was ashamed to find that he had failed to see the arrival—by means other than the rainbow bridge—of a small group of Frost Giants from Jotunheim, who had infiltrated Asgard's treasure room. Soon after, a party of Asgardians led by Thor requested passage to Jotunheim to demand answers, defying the wishes of Odin. Heimdall allowed them through, concerned at his failure to see the invaders. A largely passive figure, Heimdall was not involved in many of the events that would transpire: Thor was banished to Midgard, Odin fell into Odinsleep, and Loki assumed the throne. Loki later traveled to Jotunheim, but what he did there was invisible to Heimdall—just as the invaders had been. Heimdall grew suspicious of Loki, but officially remained loyal to him, his king. Unofficially, Heimdall "accidentally" allowed passage for the Warriors Three to Midgard to bring back Thor. Loki learned of this and relieved Heimdall of his duties, freezing him where he stood at the entrance to the Bifrost. Later, as Loki let a group of Frost Giants into Asgard, Heimdall managed to thaw in time to kill a few of them. Hearing the calls of Thor and the others from Midgard, Heimdall let them through, allowing Thor to defeat Loki and reinstate Odin as king. In the process, Thor was forced to destroy the rainbow bridge, seemingly cutting off Asgard from any further travel, but Heimdall assured him that there was always hope.[1]
