Balder is an Æsir and the brother of Sif.[1][2] He was granted virtual invincibility by Odin in recognition of his unflinching courage in the face of death, as well as his kind and gentle nature in spite of his supreme power.[3] Odin did this by essentially making all forms of living thing vow to protect him. But one such thing did not agree: mistletoe. The malicious Loki used this knowledge to attempt to assassinate Balder, but he was stopped by the Norn Queen.[4]
